Most recently, Walt Disney World fans might remember the changes made to the attraction as part of the New Fantasyland project, which included a complete restyling of the area and added more experiences. However, the attraction still lacked the central water feature that remained in Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, which opened at a similar time, and Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened later in 2005. Over in Magic Kingdom, the same decade saw a new ride mechanism that included 16 new ride vehicles debuting. In the 1990s, elephants with brand-new colored attire were added. Most of the changes that followed in Disneyland were relatively minor until the whole attraction was relocated in 1983 further into Fantasyland, which inspired a significant redesign. Remarkably the elephants in Walt Disney World were not initially wearing hats, an oversight that was soon corrected just a year later to match the original Disneyland style. ![]() The first of which was a redesign in the 1970s dubbed “Dumbo’s Circusland” that was canceled shortly after being displayed in “Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions.” Elements of the Disneyland remodel were said to be repurposed on the east coast, where Magic Kingdom opened its own version of the ride. Over the decades, the Dumbo attraction had many refurbishments and upgrades. In the mid-sixties, new Dumbo ride vehicles were installed with fixed ears, and changes were made to the eyes. Each Dumbo had hinged ears that were supposed to be able to flap, though they didn’t function as expected and were later removed. Even then, it wasn’t in its best condition. Said to have been concerned they were encouraging kids to drink alcohol, Walt Disney changed his mind about the pink characters.įlawed prototypes delayed the ride’s opening, which celebrated its unveiling a month after the park opened its gates. Who knows-maybe it'll all be worth it? But one thing's for certain: The new show is going to have some very big paws to fill. The original design of Disneyland’s Dumbo attraction didn’t include Dumbo instead, the ten ride vehicles were intended to be the trippy pink elephants featured in the film. Rumor has it the toe-tappin' merriment will pick back up in summer of 2024. Now, to be fair, Disney says it will simply be updating the attraction, but its stuck-in-time-ness is its charm! (Rockabilly renditions of classic Disney songs? No thank you! I don't need the honkytonk version of "Let It Go" in my life.) The ride as it stands is set to close permanently on Friday, January 26, and while I'm tempted to show up with a bottle of moonshine to toast my favorite furry weirdos, I hope you'll all at least join me in a moment of silence, or sad-harmonica, for this motley mountain menagerie. (Rumor has it she was romantically linked to Henry, the show's MC, which, what?!) Romantic intrigue aside, apparently the Jamboree is one of the very last attractions that Walt Disney personally helped develop, which is just one of many reasons I feel positively verklempt that it's getting a modern makeover. One Mae West-esque bear-Teddi Barra is her name-even descends from the ceiling in a flower-covered swing. Set in the heart of Frontierland inside a theater known as Grizzly Hall, this self-described hootenanny encourages audience members to clap along to 18 audio-animatronic hillbillies, which, yes, of course I will do that. The Sun Bonnet Trio takes center stage at the Country Bear Jamboree.īut I digress. ![]() ![]() Fun fact: Christopher Walken plays the bad guy.) Besides, with manageable queues, generous AC, talking taxidermy, and slightly questionable song lyrics ("My Woman Ain't Pretty But She Don't Swear None"), what's not to love? (I'm not sure I should admit this on the internet, but I have even seen The Country Bearsmovie. And while my other family members gravitate toward adrenaline-rush rides like Big Thunder Mountain and Dumbo the Flying Elephant (I know, our thrill threshold is low), I'll admit I have always had a soft spot for the weirdly delightful variety show known as the Country Bear Jamboree. In other words, I have consumed the Dole Whip, marveled at our Small World (so small!), and endured the line at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. ![]() As the mother of a 9-year-old and an 11-year-old, I have been to Disney World my fair share of times. While Disney teased last fall that it would update the long-running Country Bear Jamboree, the company officially just filed a permit to send our favorite theme park sensation into (temporary) hibernation. Pour one out for your favorite banjo-playing bears.
